Flag color meanings
What each colour traditionally stands for on flags, with real examples. One caution first: meanings are assigned by each country, often after the fact, so the same colour can mean very different things.
Red
Usually means: Courage, strength, revolution, the blood of those who fought.
Seen on: Turkey, China, Canada (the maple leaf), Indonesia.
The most widely used flag colour.

Colour families that signal a shared identity
Some combinations mean more together than apart. Using them tells people which family a flag belongs to, the “be related” half of the fifth design principle.
Pan-African
Green, gold and red, taken from Ethiopia’s flag, the African state never colonised. Used by Ghana, Senegal, Mali and many more.
Pan-Arab
Black, white, green and red from the Arab Revolt flag of 1916, echoed in Jordan, Palestine, Sudan and the UAE.
Pan-Slavic
White, blue and red, adopted at the 1848 Prague Slavic Congress, seen on Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Russia.
Choosing colours for your own flag
- Start from meaning, then check contrast. Pair a light colour (white, yellow) with a dark one (blue, red, green, black) so the edges read at a distance.
- Stay with two or three. Each extra colour makes the flag harder to remember.
- Mind unintended families. Green-yellow-red reads as pan-African; black-red-gold reads as German. That can be a feature or a problem.
- Specify the shade. Give hex or Pantone values so every copy matches. The flag maker exports exact colours in its SVG.

Questions
What does red mean on a flag?
Red is the most common flag colour and is usually explained as courage, revolution, or the blood of those who fought for independence. Some countries give it other meanings: on Nepal’s flag crimson is the national colour of the rhododendron.
What does white mean on a flag?
White most often stands for peace, purity or honesty. It is also a practical choice: it contrasts with any dark colour, which is why it so often separates two others.
Do flag colours have fixed meanings?
No. Meanings are assigned by each country or group, often after the flag was designed, and can change over time. Green can mean Islam, farmland, forests or hope depending on the flag. Always check the official explanation for a specific flag rather than assuming.
What colours are most common on national flags?
Red appears on roughly three quarters of national flags, white on about the same share, and blue on about half. Green, yellow and black follow. Purple is almost absent; Dominica and Nicaragua are the notable exceptions with small purple details.
